A greater yellowstone ecosystem grizzly bear case study: genetic reassessment for managers

چکیده

Abstract There are five grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilis ) populations in the lower 48 states of United States. My goal this Commentary was to ascertain whether genetic diversity is being lost from isolated GYE population and better understand any viability implications. I reviewed scientific literature, including two key studies that US Fish Wildlife Service (USFWS) relied upon for their 2007 current 2017 genetics policy. discovered some reveal a loss heterozygosity population, both historically recent decades. Some had statistically significant depletion rate. review took place periodically between 2010 2021 indicates genome too small long-term adaptation. The paper includes discussion about evolutionary adaptation which invokes time frames rarely considered by nature conservation planners. also examined statements USFWS’s delisting regulations highlighted those seem incongruent with thought. If read scientists, land managers, administrators, environmentalists, others background, they will USFWS decisions policy statements. This case study illustrates management agencies can provide one-sided treatment science when writing genetics.

Selecting the best stable isotope mixing model to estimate grizzly bear diets in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

Past research indicates that whitebark pine seeds are a critical food source for Threatened grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). In recent decades, whitebark pine forests have declined markedly due to pine beetle infestation, invasive blister rust, and landscape-level fires. To date, no study has reliably estimated the contribution of whitebark pine seeds to ...

Temporal, Spatial, and Environmental Influences on the Demographics of Grizzly Bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

During the past 2 decades, the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) has increased in numbers and expanded in range. Understanding temporal, environmental, and spatial variables responsible for this change is useful in evaluating what likely influenced grizzly bear demographics in the GYE and where future management efforts might benefit conservation ...

Whitebark Pine, Population Density, and Home-Range Size of Grizzly Bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

Changes in life history traits of species can be an important indicator of potential factors influencing populations. For grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), recent decline of whitebark pine (WBP; Pinus albicaulis), an important fall food resource, has been paired with a slowing of population growth following two decades of robust population increase. These ...

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem: challenges for regional ecosystem management.

An adaptive management approach is necessary but not sufficient to address the long-term challenges of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). Adaptive management, in turn, has its own particular challenges, of which we focus on two: science input, and stakeholder engagement. In order to frame our discussion and subsequent recommendations, we place the current management difficulties into thei...

Impacts of Spatial and Environmental Heterogeneity on Grizzly Bear Demographics in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem: A Source–Sink Dynamic with Management Consequences

By necessity, grizzly bear demographic models have largely ignored spatial considerations (McLellan 1989, Eberhardt et al. 1994, Eberhardt 1995, Hovey and McLellan 1996). However, ignoring spatial heterogeneity is equivalent to assuming that individuals live in a homogeneous environment and that all members of the population experience the same environmental conditions at any point in time (Pul...
